Preview of the TES Construction Set
Building Part II: Basic Construction

Next I need to find the base piece for my Redoran tavern. I click on the Static tab, since that has all the interior pieces, and look for the right object. The ID's are very helpful here, as all interior pieces start with "in_" and are followed by the culture they belong to. So I'm looking for "in_Redoran_Tavern" or some close variant of that. I find it easily. The piece's ID is "in_Redoran_tavern_01." I click and drag it into the render window. Just for kicks, I scroll up and also drag in "ex_redoran_tavern_01" to show you how the interiors and exteriors match up. It's difficult to see without rotating all around both objects, but the forms of the two match up perfectly, with a little give in the interior to allow more room to move around. You'll notice in the first shot I have all ambient lights up to 100%. In the second shot I turn them off so you can see the purplish interior lights I selected in action.

The next thing I do is take some inspiration from a master work. Whenever you're building something that's already done in the game somewhere else, it pays to take a look at it. The Bethesda designers and artists are very skilled with the editor, and looking at the work they've done is a great way to get ideas on how to do your own work. Since I'm not sure exactly where another tavern just like this is, I do a Use Report. This is a very helpful tool that is easy to use as well. All I do is scroll down in the object window, highlight my interior tavern piece with a single click, and press F1. A window pops up telling me all the other places in the game where that piece is used. I load up one of them, the Andus Tradehouse in Maar Gan, and take a look, as seen in the third shot. I note how they've divided it up with the bar in the back and boarding rooms underneath. I decide to do something similar.
