Vvardenfell Traveller's Guide
City of Gnisis

Located in the heart of the West Gash region, life in Gnisis is a harsh reality for the native Ashlander population. It's places like this which give the rest of Tamriel the harsh stereotypes of the alien-like dunmer. One look at a Gnisis dust merchant atop a tremendous silt-strider is enough to strike fear into the heart of the most hardy and experienced traveler. The most prominent features of the Ashlanders of this region extend from their tremendous adaptability to the demanding conditions of the West Gash.

Travelers should take note of the extensive use of the fauna of the region in everyday life. Clothing, armor, and even housing are constructed from 'chitin', the thick, tough hides of the large insects native to the region. Also, the special resin goggles that protect the dunmer's sight from the ash storms significantly add to the complete 'other-worldly' appearance of an ashlander to foreigners. Throw into the mix the darker skin, redder eyes, and the necessitated harsher disposition of an average ashlander, and one has a strong recipe for xenophobia. While a traveler will be apt to feel very far from home while staying in Gnisis, it should be noted that, given some convincing, the Dunmer can become accepting and even somewhat hospitable toward a foreigner who keeps a low profile and frequents the markets.
