Morrowind Hints and Spoilers FAQ

1.1 Useful Commands:

The console is only available on the PC version, and can be accessed by pressing the '~' key.

Commands:Description:
AddItem "<ItemName>" <Number> Adds <Number> amount of a specific item to the player's inventory. <ItemName> is the item's ID which can be found in the editor. This console command must also be prefixed by 'player->', i.e. player-><command> <Parameters>. For example, to add a single gold piece to your inventory, use the following command:

player->AddItem "gold_100" 1

2 Frequently Asked Questions (Morrowind)

2.1 Where is the Dwemer Puzzle Box?

Possibly one of the most asked questions. The puzzle box is found near the start of the Dwemer ruins, so you may have passed it already. For an exact location, consult the main quest walk through.

2.2 Where have my items gone!

There are two ways your items can go missing:

  1. Items that have been placed in containers can sometimes dissappear. This happens when the container previously had random items in it and you use it to store your items. After a certain amount of time, the container 'resets', which causes the items that were in there previously to vanish.

This problem can be avoided by placing your items on the floor and they will stay forever (Which is the safest way). Another way is to place them in a container that was empty the first time you looked in it. Don't try the second option unless you are certain the container was empty the first time you looked into it.

  2. If you were carrying the items, and they are now missing, chances are you broke the law somehow, and the guards took them. Since guards can spot stolen items, if you commit a crime and pay the fine (Or go to jail), all of your stolen items are removed as well. The good news is you can probably get them back, since the guards move them to the closest 'Evidence Chest'. The evidence chests can be found in the following locations:

If you find the 'Evidence Chests' in the nearest location to where you paid the fine, your items should be there. If they aren't, try some of the other Evidence Chests listed above.

2.3 When I attack people, even for a quest, the guards keep asking me to surrender. How do I avoid this?

The guards attack you because you have committed a crime (Attacking someone FIRST.).

Since it isn't a crime to defend yourself, getting the person to attack you is the best way to avoid committing a crime. There are several ways to achieve this:

  • The easiest way to get people to attack you it to Taunt them. This is one of the options found under the 'Persuasion' on the conversation dialog. Taunt is based on the Speechcraft skill, so the lower your skill, the harder it is to Taunt others into attacking you. If you have a low Speechcraft skill, you can find tips on increasing your Speechcraft and Personality here. Once you have successfully Taunted someone three or four times, they will start attacking you (Signified by a red 'Goodbye' option).

  • The spell 'Frenzy Humanoid' can be used to get people to attack you. Depending on the magnitude of the spell, you should be able to cast it onto the target and they will start to attack you.

Make sure you don't attack until they have taken the first swing!

This makes sure that the spell has worked, and you havn't attacked them first (And therefore havn't broken the law.).

  • Some quests, most notably the Morang Tong's, give you a Writ of Execution. In these cases, you can just attack the target. If a crime is reported, you can show the Writ to the guard and it is no longer treated as a crime. This is because assainations carried out by the Morang Tong are legal in the eyes of the law. However, stolen items may be taken from you, so you may need to check the Evidence Chests.

  • As a last resort, you can always try other actions that get them to attack you. If you pick their pockets and fail, chances are the target will react in a hostile manner. Since you havn't attacked first, only the pick pocket crime will be reported, which has a much lower fine than for killing someone.

Of course, paying a fine to a guard can cause them to confiscate your stolen items, which you may want to avoid.

2.4 How do I increase my Speechcraft and Personality? What is the use of the different pursuasion options?

Using Telvanni Bug Musk is the quickest way to give your Personality a quick boost. Use one just before entering a conversation, and you should find that all of the Persuasion actions are slightly easier.

There are also spells, potions and magic items scattered around Morrowind that will increase your Personality or Speechcraft skills. Using these have the same effect.

There are also trainers that can increase your Speechcraft skill, for a price.

Finally, if all else fails, you can always practice your pursuasion on everyone you meet, or you can keep practicing on the same person over and over again (preferably someone who isn't important.).

When you click on the persuasion dialog option, you are shown the following entries:
  • Admire - Success here is based on your Personality and Speechcraft. You basically try to butter the target up with flattering remarks. If you succeed, their disposition towards you increases, if you fail, it decreases.

  • Intimidate - This is also based on your Personality and Speechcraft, however, your reputation may also play a factor. If you intimidate someone and succeed, their disposition towards you increases, if you fail it decreases. Once you exit the conversation dialog, and succeeded, the targets disposition decreases by quite a bit. If you talk to them again, they will like you much less than when you left them.

  • Taunt - This is based on Personality and Speechcraft. It is used to get the target to attack you. Since it is only illegal for you to attack, but not defend, you will not be committing any crimes.

  • Bribe 10, 100, 1000 - These options mean you litterally pay the target to like you. Each time you select an option, that amount is taken from your inventory and given to the target. Each amount has an increasing chance of success, with 1000 gold pretty much always working.

2.5 I need an item for a quest that I previously found and sold (or lost). What's the easiest way to get it back?

If you have looked but cannot find the item in question, the easiest way is to use the AddItem console command. You can find the item ID by looking in the editor.

This only works if you are using the PC version, so if you are using the Xbox one, the only way around it is to find out what you did with it.

2.6 I'm not sure what is legal and what isn't, so I keep breaking the law. Any help?

Basically, most things that are illegal in real life are illegal in Morrowind. There are a few way around the law, which are covered in the Vvardenfell law section.

2.7 Why are my armour skills at 0?

This usually happens when you equip the sword called 'Fury', which basically keeps reducing all of your armour skills until they are 0. If you are using the latest patch, visiting an Imperial Shrine will restore the skills to their original values.

You can also pay a trainer, or practice your armour skills to increase them to what they were originally.

If you can remember what they were before you equipped the sword, you can always use the Set'Skill' console command to restore them to their original values.

2.8 Who is Crazy Batou and why does it give me the 'Thread of Prophecy is Broken' message when I kill him?

This is an oversight on Bethesda's part - He isn't important, and can be killed if you so wish. Perhaps at some point he did have something to do with the main quest, however, at this time he doesn't.

2.9 Some of my attributes/skills are red! What's that mean and how is it fixed?

This usually means that a creature has cast the spell 'Damage <attribute or skill>' onto your character. There are a few ways to restore the values to their original levels. They are:
  • Drink or cast Restore '<attribute>' - There are quite a few Restore potions that can be found or bought that will return the values to their original levels.
  • Visiting Imperial Shrines - The latest patch restores all of your damamged skills and attributes to their original levels. Either visit one of the Forts, or cast Divine Intervention and donate to one of the shrines.
  • If you can remember what they were, you can always use the Set'Skill' or Set'Attribute' console command to restore them to their original values.
It can also mean you have equipped the 'Fury Sword'. More information about this sword can be found here.

2.10 How can I train skills up to 100?

There are various 'Master Trainers' found all over Vvardenfell, each with 100 in a certain skill. The names and locations of these trainers can be found here.

2.11 Where are the merchants with large amounts of gold?

Creeper, a Scamp merchant can be found in Ghorak Manor, Caldera. He is a mechant that has 5,000 gold, and he buys most things, all at full price. The Talking Mudcrab can be found to the island just to the South East of Mzahnch. He is also a merchant who has 10,000 gold, and he also buys most things, all at full price. The last merchant with quite a large amount of money can be found in the Zainab camp. He can be found in Ababael Timsar-Dadisun's Yurt and buys quite a few things, and has 9,000 gold. However, he is also the master trainer in Mercantile, which means that unless you also have a high mercantile skill, your items will be sold at a very low price.

2.12 Where can I find Grand Soul Gems?

Grand Soul Gems are used to trap the souls needed for constan teffect enchantments. You can find a list of locations here.

2.13 How do I make constant effect enchantments?

To create a constant effect magic item, you will need a soul gem with a powerful soul trapped in it. You must use a creature with a soul whose value is 400 points or higher. Golden Saints or Ascended Sleepers (Not the unique Dagoth ones) are the most common creatures that you can create constant enchanments by. There are two unique creatures that you can trap, which are Dahrk Mezalf, a Dwemer Spectral Ghost, and Vivec. Of course Vivec is part of the main quest and Dahrk Mezalf is part of a Telvanni Councillors quest.

Once you have this, you will also need to know a spell that uses the desired spell effect. Now you will need an item that has enough enchantment points to hold the required enchantment. After you have all of these items, you can either:

1. Do it yourself.
2. Pay an Enchanter to do it for you.

The first option has a chance of failing, which can be quite high for constant effect enchantments. The chance of a successful enchantment can be increased by enchancing both your Intelligence and Luck attributes, as well as your Enchantment skill.

You can increase your Intelligence quite high by creating Intelligence enhancement potions. Since Alchemy is based on Intelligence, you can use a trick when creating these potions. When you create a few Intelligence enhancement potions, drink them before creating the others. This allows you to create more powerful potions with a higher chance of success.

The second option requires quite a bit of gold - which doesn't include bartering. The advantage of this is that there is no chance of failure.

2.14 Whenever I try to steal things I get caught! What's the best way to do it?

The first thing to note is that the crime will only be reported if you can be seen. This only works if there is a wall or similar obstical between you and the NPC. If that is the case, you shouldn't be reported when you steal an item.

If the NPC never leaves the room, then you will have to use your sneak skill, by pressing and holding the sneak button. You can tell when you are successfully sneaking when the 'sneak' icon is shown. If your sneak skill is low, there are ways to increase your chances:

1. Make sure the NPC is facing away from you. The best way to achieve this is to get the NPC to auto greet you, then move away from the item you wish to steal. You will notice that the NPC turrns to face you for a couple of seconds, and will now have their back to the item. This only increases your sneak chances slightly.
2. If the item is inside, you can steal the item then quickly run outside. Once outside, drop the stolen item (and all other stolen items), and pay the fine. After this, you can pick up the stolen item without repercussions. If you don't drop your other stolen items, they will be confiscated, so you should pick them back up from the nearest Evidence Chest.
3. Casting a high level chameleon spell will increase your chances of sneaking greatly. You will still need to hold the sneak button before stealing the items.

Also, merchants recognise if you try to sell items you have stolen from them. To sell them, make sure you go to another merchant.

2.15 Do I have to do the main quest?

No you don't. Morrowind is structured in such a way that you can either do the main quest at your pace, or not do it at all! Also, once the main quest is finished, you can still keep playing.

2.16 Where can I get Daedric armour?

A list of all the locations can be found here.

2.17 How is the spell chance worked out?

Spell Chance:
( [Luck / 8] + [Willpower / 4] + [Spell Skill * 2.5] - [Magic Cost * 1.25] ) * ( 0.6 + [0.4 * Current Fatigue / Max Fatigue] )

2.18 How is the armour raiting worked out?

Armour Raiting:
( Base Armour Raiting * Armour Skill / 30 )

3 Frequently Asked Questions (Tribunal)

3.1 How do I start playing Tribunal?

When you start Morrowind, make sure the Morrowind and Tribunal data files are selected. Load your current save game, or start a new game. When you rest (not wait), there is a chance that you will be attacked by some assassins. Once you defeat them, you should get a journal entry telling you to speak with a guard about the attacks, and they should give you instructions on how to get to Mournhold.

3.2 Can I travel back to Vvardenfell from Mournhold?

In the Mournhold Royal Palace, speak with Effe-Tei the Argonian mage. He will transport you back to Ebonheart in Vvardenfell. Your companions or pack animals won't be transported with you.

3.3 How do I stop the Dark Brotherhood attacks?

There are a few ways. The number of attacks is limited based on your characters level, so the attacks will eventually stop. The other way is to follow the journal entries until you are told to speak to Asciene Rane in the Grand Council Chambers, Ebonheart.

3.4 What artifacts does the Mournhold Museum of Artifacts accept?

You can find a list of artifacts here.
